Read full description of the books:
When I first read THE MASTER OF JALNA, I was very angry at author Mazo de la Roche. Previously I had loved the Whiteoak Saga as related in JALNA, WHITEOAKS OF JALNA and FINCH'S FORTUNE. I'd been looking forward eagerly to the next installment. But in this book, de la Roche does several (to my mind) unforgivable things:
(1) She killed off Eden Whiteoak, my favorite character! Halfway through the book Eden dies horribly of tuberculosis, coughing up blood in his sister's spare bedroom. This upset me no end. Eden was a charming, mischievous character, someone you loved to hate. He generated endless conflict and, if given the chance, could have generated a whole lot more. SO WHY KILL HIM OFF? What a waste.
(2) She married off Finch to SARAH. Again...WHY? Sarah is clearly wrong for Finch, we all see that, and the union promises to be a disaster. I nearly threw the book across the room in my disappointment and dismay when I realized where this particular storyline was headed...
(3) She allowed Renny to cheat on Alayne! Another major shocker. Granted, the two of them are temporarily estranged at the time, but the very fact that he strays is disheartening. And what's more, the "other woman" is singularly unattractive, so Renny has little or no excuse. In fact, he isn't portrayed here in a favorable light at all. He even takes out a mortgage on Jalna---blasphemy!---to help get a new home for his mistress. That alone would be enough to tarnish his image forever, in my eyes...
Much as I generally enjoy the Jalna books, this one just didn't live up to my expectations. The only bright spot is Renny's and Alayne's infant daughter, Adeline. Little Adeline is a spitfire, the very image of her namesake great-grandmother, and very funny. Watching her grow up will be a delight!

Read information about the authorMazo de la Roche, born Mazo Louise Roche, was the author of the Jalna novels, one of the most popular series of books of her time.
The Jalna series consists of sixteen novels that tell the story of the Canadian Whiteoak family from 1854 to 1954, although each of the novels can also be enjoyed as an independent story. In the world of the Whiteoaks, as in real life, people live and die, find success and fall to ruin. For the Whiteoaks, there remains something solid and unchanging in the midst of life's transience--the manor house and its rich surrounding farmland known as "Jalna." The author, Mazo de la Roche, gave the members of her fictitious family names from gravestones in Ontario's New Market cemetery, and the story itself balances somewhere between fact and fiction. Critics think events in the novels reflect de la Roche's dreams, moods, and life experiences. As the daughter of a traveling businessman, she may have seen the Jalna estate as the roots she never had, while the character Finch, from Finch's Fortune, is thought to be a reflection of herself.
