I feel like I am popping my Japanese literature cherry as it has been so long since I have read anything written from that corner of the world, at least when comes to books with only words in it. Only shame in it is not to be able to read in original language as the tiny nuances and atmosphere will always be lost in translation way or the other.
Goth is a novel structured from short stories following two young sociopaths with a fascination and need to monitor serial killers, killers and other violent oddities happening in their living area. There is nothing unusual in youngsters having morbid fascinations, but the limitless way Otsuichi builds these characters and rounds the individual stories together has unfamiliar uniqueness within.
Goth is violent in nature, but the disturbing atmosphere comes from the bleakness. It comes from this emotionless and motionless approach to cruelty and morally questionable situations where the common reactions and actions are almost completely lacking. It is very empty and inhuman while at the same time it is so very clean from vivid and gruesome details.
This is a talent I usually find only in Japanese art form, and I am very much a fan of it. Boundary breaking creepiness being uncomfortable rather than scary, or frightening, in its core.
To structure a novel from short stories is a challenge, and here it comes apparently clear why that is. The flow breaks, the quality differs, but also the repetitive nature of it is highlighted when each of the stories have the same necessary introductions to the same, familiar characters.
During the course of this novel, Otsuichi's writing improves. His writing and the use of language grows more mature and rich, the stories mindfuckery deepens and changes to more complicated than it looks on the surface when taking just a quick glance at it.
Overall, I am so impressed and fascinated by this work that I have every desire in me to hunt down the manga adaption of this novel and see how well it would do with art supporting the emptiness of the words.
