Another fun filled frolic through the prehistoric pages of Marvel's Milestones (Ok, Ok, so they're not prehistoric, but what the heck, it's alliterative). This volume focuses on the early days of the rise of the totalitarian years of the 1980s. AS with other such anthologies this collection offers the good, the bad and the forgotten.
Alpha Flight #1 by John Byrne is the first solo outing of Canada's answer to the Avengers; Cloak & Dagger #1 by Bill Mantlo & Rick Leonardi takes to the mean streets of NYC in the midst of the War on Drugs; Dazzler #1 by Tom DeFalco & John Romita Jr. offers solo adventures for mutant singer; Falcon #1 by Jim Owlsey & Paul Smith provides a solo adventure for Captain America's longtime partner; Hawkeye #1 by Mark Gruenwald gives the readers a chance to see the bow-slinging Avenger in solo action; Hercules #1 by Bob Layton gives a glimpse of the Olympian Avenger's possible future; from the pages of Hulk #21 we get a short pulp-hero-era inspired adventure of Dominic Fotune by Denny O'Neil & Howard Chaykin; Jack of Hearts #1 by Mantlo & George Freeman offers the opening chapter of this character's mini-series; the pages of Ka-Zar the Savage #11 give us a short adventure featuring a very young Zabu by Bruce Jones & Gil Kane; Magik #1 by Chris Claremont & John Buscema takes a trip to limbo with the X-Men; Marvel Graphic Novel #4 by Claremont & Bob McLeod debuts The New Mutants; Marvel Spotlight #9 by Mantlo & Steve Ditko chronicles the adventures of The Hero Who Could Be You; while Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions #1 by Gruenwald, Mantlo, Romita, Layton & Steven Grant features almost every hero in the Marvel Universe; Power Pack #1 by Louise Simonson & June Brigman premiere the pre-teen superhero quartet; Saga of Crystar: Crystal Warrior #1 by Jo Duffy & Brett Blevins offers a rare glimpse into the marketing side of Marvel with the toy line tie-in fantasy; Vision & the Scarlet Witch #1 by Mantlo & leonardi takes on a Halloween adventure with the wedded Avengers & Wolverine #1 by Claremont & Frank Miller shines a whole new light on the clawed mutant that forever changed that character.
As with other volumes, this one is a mixed bag, but there are some goodies here that just might surprise you. With the arrival of the 1980s the comic industry really embraced the notion of the mini-series and there are quite a few examples of those gems in these pages. Hercules, Falcon, Hawkeye, Jack of Hearts, Magik, Cloak & Dagger, Wolverine and the Vision & Scarlet Witch were all characters that were not deemed followed enough to launch their own series, but fan interest was there to give them these mini-series try-outs to see how they sold. These short run mini-series basically replaced titles like Marvel Spotlight, Marvel Premiere, Marvel Presents, Amazing Adventures, Marvel Feature etc. with a way to showcase these characters without committing to an ongoing, open-ended series. While some of these mini-series are great stories, it's also frustrating to only get the first chapter of these wonderful tales. That's the only real problem with this type of collection - story interruptis.
