Read full description of the books:
Summary: This isn’t the first book of the Spiderwick Chronicles. I enjoyed the fact that the beginning few pages of the book are a map and a recap of the books that came before this book. In this book, James is rescuing his sibling Simon from a bunch of goblins that have him locked in a cage. He does this with the help of his sister Mallory and a hobgoblin named Hogsqueal. The three siblings end up getting away by tricking the goblins into being eaten by a troll. Then they end up back near their house where they help a griffin that is injured and keep a kitten. They get in trouble when they get back home with their mother because she’s been worried about them. There are illustrations in the book that really add to the story. Some of them adding expression through the scared or surprised look that is perfectly depicted on the children’s faces. I really liked the book. It’s a funny short read. That is perfect for introducing children the genre of Modern Fantasy.
Critique: Though it’s a short read and it’s expected to not take long to read. I felt like it was lacking important details. The pacing of the book was really fast which is great because they’re escaping but it could have been drawn out more to add more context and detail. I think that because this book is part of a series it's not as detailed as it otherwise would be. The fact that it's lacking those details makes it a short read but not as fun to read if it would have been if it was just it's own book and not part of a series.
Strengths and Weaknesses: The strength of this book it that it's a short and fun book to read. It's good for kids that don't like to read longer book and if they happen to like this book or any of the books in the series then it can lead them to read other similar books or work up to longer books. A weakness of this book is that if you read it out of context without reading the first two books first then you don't get all the information that you need to really connect with the characters of the book.
Use in Classroom: This book is perfect for a lesson on Modern Fantasy. It would be a good book to read aloud to the students and then pause periodically throughout the book to let them identify aspects of the book that are elements of Modern Fantasy. This will allow the students to identify elements of Modern Fantasy will also having fun listening to the adventures of three siblings that can now see things they couldn't before.
