This is a compilation of myths of many ancient civilizations that have been translated into an imminently readable format. This book is meant for the new student of mythology, someone who is interested in the subject but not yet ready for the analytical analysis of the scholar. There are not many illustrations, and out of those that there are, over half are maps that show where in the world these tales have their origins. The order of the stories follow the known history of mankind from that of Sumer in Mesopotamia up to the founding of Rome.
This book is a good introduction to the subject of mythology, but also provides an entertaining read. None of the stories take very long to get through, and are written in a style that intrigues the imagination as well as teaching something about the cultures they are from. The author provides notes at the beginning of each section that gives the actual histories that the stories are part of, as well as crediting the historians and scholars whose research she has relied upon for the rewriting of these myths.
This book was originally published in 1960, but has been reprinted several times due to the fact that it is considered a classic of mythological studies, and is sometimes used in schools as a supplemental textbook.

Norma Lorre Goodrich, a prolific author, was an Arthurian scholar known for her unconventional theory that King Arthur was Scottish -not English or Welsh. She was a professor of comparative literature and writing for many years at the University of Southern California and the Claremont Colleges.
